Dr. Nicholas (Jing) Yuan is President of Haier Global AI Research Institute and a Vice President at Haier. He is also an Adjunct Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He focuses on frontier AI research and technological innovation, leading global teams to achieve breakthroughs in areas such as home intelligence and physical AI, enable innovation across Haier Group’s diverse businesses, and drive the Group’s AI-native transformation.
Previously, he was a Partner at Microsoft and Technical Advisor to the Corporate Vice President (CVP), focusing on strategy, long-range technology planning, and technical and product innovation. He also served as Vice President of AI, Chief Scientist, and Director of the Language & Speech Innovation Lab at Huawei Cloud, overseeing the research and development of AI technologies and products and their commercialization across sectors including smart cities, healthcare, manufacturing, finance, and energy. Before joining Huawei, he was a Senior Applied Scientist Lead/Manager and Deputy General Manager of the AI Creation Business Team at Microsoft. He led the development and application of Bing’s Asia-Pacific knowledge graph, as well as AI creation technologies and AIGC products for Microsoft Xiaoice. Earlier, he was a researcher at Microsoft Research Asia. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology of China, where his doctoral advisor was Academician Guoliang Chen.
Nicholas has authored more than 100 papers published in or accepted by conferences and journals including KDD, NeurIPS, ACL, AAAI, WWW, ICDE, UbiComp, TKDE, and TOIS. His research has received Best Paper or Best Student Paper Awards at KDD, ICDM, and CVPR, Test-of-Time Awards at KDD and MDM, and a 10-Year Impact Honorable Mention at SIGSPATIAL. He also received the First-class Prize of the Natural Science Award from China’s Ministry of Education and regularly serves on conference program committees and as a journal reviewer in AI and data mining. Nicholas is a Fellow of the IEEE.
